    1. The Industrial Revolution was an increase in production brought about by the use of machines and characterized by the use of new energy sources. It started around the 1750's in Europe, specifically Britain. Some important inventions include the flying shuttle, made by John Kay in 1733, the spinning jenny, and the waterframe. Hydro power was used until the invention of steam engines, with the first successful one created by Thomas Newcomen. Improvements were made to machines, with James Watt's contribution to the improved steam engine. Steam power aided in the making of steam boats and the railroad.

    2. People made their own household tools and agricultural equipment or obtained them in a local village prior to the Industrial Revolution.

    3. Cottage industry is a business or manufacturing activity carried on in a person's home. Two examples of cottage industry would be weaving in India, as well as businesses selling baked goods out of a home.

    4. Industry is mostly concentrated in Europe, North America, and East Asia. This is mainly due to the availability of resources in these areas, the large workforce, and development in transportation, allowing these goods to be easily shipped.

    5. Most industry in the U.S is clustered in the northeast. Many urban areas are located there, such as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Many factories were formed there in the industrial revolution because of access to ports for trade, and have remained there today.

    6. Most industry in East Asia is located on the east coast and in major cities of major countries. For example, Beijing and Shanghai are major industrial powerhouses in China, where industry is a large factor.
