Define Nationality. Nationality is identity to a place you were born or raised because of legal attachment and/or pride. Most people have some sort of emotional attachment to their nationality.

Name similarities between nationality and ethnicity. The nationality and ethnicity of a person may be very similar or the same because of place of birth. If someone is born in India and has an Indian culture, both their nationality and ethnicity would be Indian because it is there place of origin and the culture they follow.

What is a nation-state? A nation state is a state that identifies itself as sovereign from a nation. The state is a political and geological with the nation is cultural and ethnic.

What is nationalism? Nationalism is a belief that involves someone overly attached to a nation. That person feels pride and emotional attachment towards the nation.

What are some nationalities in South Asia? Some nationalities in South Asia are Indian, Vietnamese, and Pakistani.

What are some nationalities in Africa? Some nationalities in Africa are Sudanese, Egyptian, and Nigerian.

    Key Issue 1

    1. The first major ethnicity in the United States, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, is White. Whites make up 72% of the population and are distributed evenly across the country. The second major ethnicity is Hispanic. Hispanics make up 16% of the population and most of them live in the southwest, near the Mexican border, and in urban areas of major cities. The third major ethnicity in the U.S. is African American. 13% of the population is African American according to the U.S. Census in 2010. High percentages of African Americans are in the southeast and urban areas of major cities. Asian American is the fourth major ethnicity in the United States making up 5% of the population. Most Asian Americans live in Hawaii, California, and also urban areas of major cities.

    2. Race is identity with a group of people who share a biological ancestor. Nationality is identity with a group of people that share a legal attachment and personal allegiance to a particular place because they were born there. Ethnicity is identity with a group of people who share the same cultural traditions of a particular homeland or hearth. The differences are race deals with a biological ancestor, nationality deals with legal attachment to a place because of one’s birth there, and ethnicity deals with cultural traditions of a particular homeland.

    3. In Brazil, racial classification has always been a contentious topic. Brazil uses race to determine social status which is wrong because if one is a lower race they have a disadvantage from the others. One cannot determine their race and whom gave birth to them. In South Africa, apartheid, that once caused discrimination throughout the country, is now lifted and has been replaced with a system of equal rights. Most Whites still have higher incomes but blacks now hold political power. This is making race less of an issue in South Africa. Egypt does not have the problem of race like the other two countries. In Egypt the larger issue is based off of religious discrimination. Race classification is a bad practice because it provides unequal opportunities.

    4. I had no idea that there are less blacks than Hispanics in the U.S. I thought Blacks were almost up there with the Whites.

    5. I also assumed there were more blacks in the U.S. than Hispanics, and am surprised to hear that the statistics showed otherwise. Perhaps i had made this generalization due to the large number of blacks in my state, city, and area.

    6. This information is interesting- especially the statistics. Growing up in the south, I was under the impression that blacks made up a much higher percentage of the population than Hispanics. It is good to see this to see differences in the populations of each region in the u.s

    Key Issue 3

The three religions of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are all clustered in both Israel and in the Horn of Africa. This causes both of these regions to have conflict over religion. The Middle East has been in conflict for thousands of years. Palestinians and Israelis both want control of holy land particularly in Jerusalem. The Horn of Africa has seen many civil wars in the past. Sudan has split in two after a long civil war and Somalia was overrun by a rebellious group. Eritrea and Ethiopia fought each other in a short war at the turn of the century. Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia are still at unrest in some areas. Many of these conflicts are brought about different views which are heavily influenced by religious beliefs.

Christianity is an important religion in the Horn of Africa because the Axum Kingdom converted to Christianity in the 4th century. Many other countries/ kingdoms followed, and Christianity became widespread in the area. Christianity is important in the Middle East (in Jerusalem) because Jesus's life and teachings all occurred there. This land is holy to Christians because of this.

Islam is important in the Horn of Africa because persecuted Muslims fled the Arabian peninsula and found shelter in the Horn. Thousands of Muslims fled to the Horn which is why so many are there today. Islams also consider Jerusalem as their holy land, because that is where Muhammad, their founder, ascended into heaven.

Judaism is important in the Horn of Africa because Menelik settled in Ethiopia after living in Jerusalem. He then brought with him the Ark of the Covenant, a very holy Jewish artifact, with him. Many Jews followed Menelik to the Horn. Jerusalem is important to the Jews because they believe that it is the
land of Abraham promised to them by God. All of their prophets lived there and they have always considered it their land given by God.

Each religion having a significance in these two regions causes conflict. Every religion wants to have their own way and wants to be the best religion there is. This leads to competition because of religion.
This competition can lead to fighting, which happens often. Soon, religions become rivals- trying to get the edge over one another. This explains the conflict in the Middle-East and in the Horn of Africa.
